Only nine weeks to
go... !
It's
just under nine weeks until the first Self-Publishing Conference takes place at
the University of Leicester, and it already looks like it'll be a very busy
day!
The Self-Publishing Conference offers a unique
opportunity to meet and interact with individuals and companies working within
the self-publishing sector in an informal atmosphere. It is the perfect day out
for anyone thinking about, or already involved in, self-publishing their work,
whether in book or ebook form. The conference offers multiple sessions on a wide
variety of topics, allowing delegates to pick and choose the talks and workshops
most relevant to their own project.
In the last few months we've added a
some new speakers and Author Ambassadors, authors who have self-published using
a variety of methods who will be on hand to share their experiences during
sessions and informally over lunch.
The
Conference takes place on Sunday March 24, 2013, 9am-5pm, at Stamford Court
Conference Centre, University of Leicester.
Registration
is open...
You can still book your place at the
conference, for £45.00 per person. This includes a delegate’s pack, morning
coffee, buffet lunch, afternoon tea, and a choice from more than nine sessions
on different aspects of self-publishing.

Best book cover design of 2012
We
are excited to announce a poll that showcases the best Matador-designed book
cover from 2012, while supporting the valuable work done by Arthritis
Research UK.
‘We’ve chosen what we feel are the top 12 book
covers that were designed by the Matador design team last year, and we’re now
asking the general public to vote for their favourite,’ said Terry Compton,
Matador’s Head of Production. ‘Cover design is such an important aspect of book
publishing, and one that self-publishing authors often get wrong, so we wanted
to demonstrate that self-published covers, if properly designed, can equal
anything that published by the mainsteam publishers.’
Terry Compton will
be running a session at The Self Publishing Conference on striking cover design,
with a 'cover clinic'.
The books up for the accolade are: When the
Siren Calls (Tom Barry), The Gauntlet of Fear (David Cargill),
All the Daughters (Penny Freedman), I con’s Request (Gareth
Wiles), Journey to Peace (Adam Joe Lawton), The Poisons of
Goodladies Road (Malcolm Noble), Crawling Round South Oakwood
(Stephen Slaughter), Changing Times (Steve Millward), A Little Bit
on the Side (John O’ Sullvan), Roses Under the Miombo Tree (Amanda
Parkyn), The Cruel Peak (Gil Hogg) and Walking Towards Light
(Jay Davies).
Matador will make a donation to Arthritis Research UK of at
least £100 – and the more votes, the higher the donation! This is a charity
close to the heart of Matador’s staff, as one of our members has been diagnosed
with Psoriatic Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. The author of the book
whose cover wins will also receive a £25 book token.
The shortlisted
covers:
Votes for the best Matador designed book cover of 2012 can be

The London Book Fair encompasses the broad spectrum of the publishing industry and is the global market place and leading business-2-business exhibition for rights negotiation and the sales and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels.
If you are attending LBF on Monday, I will be appearing at the AuthorLounge at 5pm for the session, Pathways to Publication. This panel session will launch a new book for writers - Choosing A Self-Publishing Service - which promises to be the first comprehensive guide to contemporary self publishing, drawing on the expertise of its members, advisors and industry Watchdog Service. This is a book I co-wrote with Shelf Help’s Ben Galley and edited by ALLi founder, Orna Ross. It is a must for any author navigating the landscape of self-publishing providers in today’s world. The Pathways to Publication panel will feature, Mick Rooney of The Independent Publishing Magazine, bestselling indie author, Steena Holmes, Ben Galley of Shelf Help, Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn, and NYT bestselling author, C.J. Lyons, with Orna Ross chairing the discussion.
I hope to see you all, whatever publication path you intend following. There is something for all authors to learn and experience at LBF 2013.
