Let me just say in conclusion (so we might all push on with our daily deeds) that the list was not intended as any kind of definitive publishing voices ‘best of’ and it wasn’t created nor directed at a specific audience – indie authors or traditional publishing. It was meant for anyone interested in the future of publishing.
Yes, it was underpinned by what is currently going on between Amazon and Hachette, and other publishers. And, yes, it was intended to create debate, which I think it’s fair to say it has done.
But most of all, I created the list so we might examine where we get our information from when it comes to understanding what is going on in the industry. We are seeing far too much polarisation in current debate, and it isn’t healthy as far as resolving where this industry is going. And when I say industry, I include everyone (legacy, self-published authors, new digital entities, retailers, distributors and all those who support and interact with it).
I don’t do publishing ghettos, and I’m seeing far too much of that from all sides.
I will leave you with something I said to Porter Anderson last night.
“Sometimes everyone wants to call to the same bar on 5th Street because they see familiar faces and hear exactly the things they want to hear. Once in a while, a trip to another bar works wonders.”
Thank you all who joined in the debate here and elsewhere. Your opinion and perspective was much appreciated.
