BEA Goes Indie Author Hub – For Dollars!

BEA-uPublishU

It looks like the annual Book Expo America will take a leaf out of the London Book Fair event by launching a dedicated self-publishing author showcase. Self-publishing has had an increased presence at LBF in recent years and the organisers of BEA 2014 will introduce uPublishU, a stage for entrepreneurial authors, but limited to 160 enrolling members. BEA are calling it an Author Hub, and yep, just like the USA does it best, it comes with paid basic and premium membership to the trade event (prices run from $599-1200).

Porter Anderson, writing on Jane Friedman’s website, talks in far more detail about the ‘offer’ and event on this post for his series Writing on the Ether. I’m all for publishing trade shows opening up to indies, but this just smacks of old ideas, industry gatekeeping in all its rawness. As Porter wrote last year in regard to BEA – The Indies Are Coming to BEA. Maybe, but the reality is that the indies are paying for their rightful place at BEA, and that simply isn’t good enough.
The BEA Author Hub will operate all three days of BEA during the end of May 2014. I think I’ll settle for LBF 2014 and give BEA another miss this year! But if you do want to check out more detail – go here
